India’s insurance industry has a new category, and one startup just created it

Every so often, an industry gets rebuilt by a company that refuses to accept its default assumptions. RiskPe, a Jaipur-founded insurtech startup, is attempting exactly that in Indian insurance, a sector that has changed little in how it serves the customer once the premium is collected.

The company was started by Krit Sharma, Surendra Sharma and Saket Prag, three founders who arrived at the same frustration from different vantage points. Surendra Sharma’s two decades inside commercial insurance distribution had shown him how commission structures routinely shaped what got sold, not what a client actually needed. Krit saw the same pattern from inside an online insurance aggregator’s distribution machinery. Saket Prag, a software engineer, wanted to know why an industry built on managing risk had never built good tools to help the insured manage their own.

Their answer was structural: RiskPe charges a direct fee for insurance advisory, portfolio management and premium negotiation, removing commissions from the equation entirely. It works with policies from any insurer, positioning itself less as a seller and more as a long-term insurance manager, a role closer to a wealth manager than a traditional agent.

Its standout innovation is a claim simulation engine, arguably the first of its kind in the insurtech space, that models a real claim scenario against a customer’s actual policy wording and estimates the expected payout in advance. For an industry where claim rejections are common and rarely explained in plain language, this shifts the moment of discovery from crisis to convenience, well before a hospital bill or an accident report is even in question.

RiskPe has layered this with AI-powered policy insight reports, a dedicated claim recovery desk for rejected or disputed cases, and a newer offering that lets companies outsource their entire employee insurance operations, including group health and benefits administration, to RiskPe’s team.

Together, these pieces resemble something closer to a full insurance support ecosystem than a conventional broker or aggregator, an entirely new category for a market that has, until now, only known buying insurance and hoping for the best.
